Title: BSA STARFIRE WHEELS
Post by: bikerbob on 29 Aug, 2023, 16:50
Just bought a 1970 Starfire and wondered why when on center stand both wheels were still touching the ground. It has been fitted with 19" wheels instead of !8" wheels could someone tell me what effect this will have on the running of the bike. will it go faster or slower at a set rpm and will it effect the accuracy of the speedo. Other than that it is a very nice bike tyres are brand new Dunlop, chrome and paintwork excellent starts and runs OK but have not been out on the road yet still waiting for DVLA with new V5C must be on a go slow at the moment. Thanks

A larger diameter wheels plus inevitable wear in both stand pivots will mean that the larger wheels will touch the ground.
If you think that the larger diameter rim will be 1/2" nearer the ground , plus the od of the tyre, you don't have much left.
There is the possibility that a PO may have fitted incorrect rear shocks, that are longer than they should be.

Thanks for the reply have checked and it has correct rearshocks fitted 12.9" centers. The wheel has plenty of clearance around the mudguard it has a brand new Dunlop K70 fitted but it is 3.25 width whereas stock size is 3.50 . So the only major concern I have is speedo accuracy will have to check and see what speedo drive is fitted to the rear wheel, if it is for the 18" I think BSA made drives for the !9" wheels that were fitted to some A65 models maybe they will fit any further info would help. THanks
