Title: Rocker fitment.
Post by: chrisx1 on 22 Aug, 2023, 13:07
Is there an easy way to fit the rocker arms. I find that the solid washers keep getting between the spring washers on re-assembly. So that I have part of the spring washer against the alloy shoulder, where it's not supposed to be.

I fit my spring washer with the flat washer at same time, they are a pain and they do still sometimes slip, it's also easy to deform the spring washer. Whilst I've never deformed one in 20 years (and I've built a few engines) I deformed 2 the other week. But I am loosing some of my dexterity (or rather I'm getting fatter fingered).

A small electricians screw driver to pick, push and poke the spring and flat washer helps a lot also.

How tight do you do the spindle nuts. My exhaust still has left to right movement curtesy of the spring washers but the inlets are squeezed tight and the nut is only finger tight

tightening the nut will only tighten the shaft into the casting of the head, the free play on the rocker is relative to the spring, the shims and the rocker arm.

It looks to me however that the "washer" item you have fitted along side the rockers are too thick. these are not washers but more like shims. you can buy them as a complete set.

Pictures can be deceiving, but if you can measure the thickness of the ones you have (the top right hand one in your photo looks thinner than the rest) I will try and find the ones I have (my workshop is a S*** tip at the minute) and let you know.

 :) :) :) :)

Many moons ago I made a tool to line up all these washers and arms. If I can find it I'll lend it to anyone who wihes to use it. You pay the postage both ways. Or Just accept it can be a right pig, Make sure the head casting is abso bone dry and use lots of vaseline to hold the washers in place.

Luck

Hi Chris,
As Allan stated, you have normal soft washers fitted whereas they should be thrust washers, new set here reasonably priced:

Best wishes...

I think I understand Mike. You assemble everything onto the tool then slowly push the real spindle into place pushing your tool out as you go. Is that it?

Not quite. Assemble every thing on tool. gently remove the tool and then carefully slide the shaft in place. You cant push through cos the holes are different sizes.

Just measured mine which are 0.035" (1mm is 0.039" for comparison) 1.4mm is about 0.055"
