Title: Security bolt holes - rear rim.
Post by: ferretjuggler on 09 Aug, 2023, 20:00
I bought a complete rear wheel for my '69 Lightning basket case.
Cheap and cheerful, the plan is to get my project up and running on a pair of scruffy but physically sound wheels, and then rebuild with stainless rims and spokes at some point in the future.
And I've just spotted that the Jones rim is pierced for security bolts.
I hate security bolts, I can never manage to get on with them.
I think that I've got a pair somewhere, off a Triumph twin, but I've no idea where I've stashed them.
Can I just blank off the holes with a grommet or plug ?
I was thinking of taking the wheel to work and tacking a couple of small steel plates across the holes from the inside.
Let's face it, rechroming rims these days is more trouble than buying new, so the rim is going to get scrapped eventually anyway.
There was always the suggestion that a powerful bike would spin the tyre on the rim, and rip the valve core out of the tube in the process.
I've never known that happen on any of the big Japanese bikes that I've had, and none had security bolts fitted

I don't like security bolts on road bikes either, run at 30psi and never have a problem.

I usually cut the valve off an old inner tube with the rubber welt around and put that through the hole. But you can just as easily reduce the head on a 1/4" bolt, polish it smooth and fit that.

I was concerned about running without a security bolt on the rear on my T120. I decided to leave it off and marked the wheel and tyre so that i could keep an eye on the possible shift. After 4000 miles the alignment is still exactly as when first marked. I haven't blocked the hole, just let the rim tape to the work.

In the absence of any replies in the first 24 hours I'm afraid that I jumped the gun somewhat.
Two thin steel plates rather badly welded on (industrial welder with 1mm wire) and ground down nice and smooth so it can't snag the rim tape.
I wasn't sure if the 30 psi or whatever I'll be putting in it would be enough to force the tube and rim tape through the hole.
I have to admit to not actually checking out the parts book yet.
My bike is a '69 US export Lightning, I'm not sure if it should actually have security bolts, but it won't be getting any.
I'm assuming that only things like desert racers would actually need them on an A65 ?

Your fix will work,

The spoke two down from it will likely cause you more problems.

Yeah I spotted that as soon as I removed the rim tape.
Or rather I should say about six layers of insulation tape.
About a quarter of the spokes need grinding down, lucky that I have an angle grinder at home too.
Now if only I could find the spoke key that I bought last year......
