Title: Bantan D5 points Casting
Post by: bobby12 on 09 Aug, 2023, 17:31
Hi
I have just purchased a Bantam D5  in a modified trials trim, I really want to try and start the bike before stripping down to restore.
I am trying to remove the casting which has the points and condenser fitted to.
I have removed the 3 screw's on the outside, the long screw on the right hand bottom side and the screw in the middle of the crankshaft. The casting rotates and moves forward about 3/4 mm but will not come off, I do not have a manual yet so cannot see what's behind it.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to why this casting will not come off ?
Thanks

Hi
Have you taken the cam off the end of the crankshaft?
It is a bit annoying but it has to come off to allow the stator plate to be removed. Watch out for the tiny (and I mean tiny) woodruff key. With the plate off it's well worth replacing the oilitecbush in the centre as it's almost certainly worn allowing the crankshaft to whip and giving variable points opening. Replacement bushes are available from eg Rex an aunt.
Regards

Hi
Many thanks for the info. I have not removed the cam, I don't know what it is, I will take a look, having no manual makes things difficult, I have ordered one ,Is it a simple job to remove the cam ?
Thanks

There are plenty of online service sheets and owners manuals to download for free , giving a new owner vital data in ownership.
Single screw in the end of the crankshaft and then wriggle the cam off the end of the crankshaft.

Hi
Finally removed the cam, bit rusted on.
I understand how to set the timing but I seem to have a problem with points, if I set minimum gap , fag paper etc, then my points maximum is only around ten thou, if I set the points gap to fifteen thou then the minimum gap is greater than a fag paper.
Any suggestion  please.
Thanks,

Set the points gap first , then turn piston to the right distance btdc, then rotate casing to cause the points JUST to separate.
I use a meter on beep to tell me when the points separate.

Some aftermarket points sets have slightly incorrect fibre heels.
