Title: Blown base gasket
Post by: chrisx1 on 09 Aug, 2023, 08:54
My base gasket has blown, other than oil leakage is this likely to cause any other problems or can I ignore it for the time being.

If it's done that then your cam timing could be out by a tooth, putting the timed breather out of sync (I know of this first hand, because of an incorrectly made cam pinion).

If the breathing is timed correctly it shouldn't blow out of such areas. If you motor still can't breath properly, fit an extra breather pipe, off the rocker box can be discrete.

The one with red pen is the correct one. They keyway was 1.25 teeth out.

 :) :) :) :)

Your point is taken and accepted, but wouldnt the machine be running like a bag of something nasty if your cam timing was out by that much.

That's a bit beyond me. Anyway looks like the head gasket is leaking, so will have to tear the top end down and check the head for warping.

Surprisingly not, all it does is shift where the power is, mine was 20° advanced (one tooth is equal to 16.4° of crank movement) so it gave the bike a lot of power at the lower end, top speed wasn't as much as it could be, but at 105 it was faster than most would ever get to. I just fitted an extra breather until I found out what the cause really was.

Head gasket leaking on its own shouldn't really cause that much crank case pressure. If your rings are blowing by, this could increase crank case pressure.

Thanks for that. Not something I had ever considered.

So how do I go about adding a breather ?

As your taking the head off, I'd lift the barrel a few inches too, clean the original gasket and goop off and set it down with some gasket sealer of your choice (I like loctite 518)

For an additional breather you can tap off the rocker box, or put a fitting off the primary side, I usually modify the inner cover and use a 1/8npt fitting to a 5/16 ID hose. It can be done quite descretely.

Do you have any photos of such fittings?
