Title: Rear damper setting 1955/56 "Golden Flash" (swinging arm) ?
Post by: Stephen foster on 02 Aug, 2023, 07:28
Good Morning ,

Ive just been giving My 1955/56 "Golden Flash" (swinging arm) a refit and have never been certain which rear  damper setting would be the best ?
I am 12 stone and 5-8" and rarely carry a passenger .

The dampers are in good condition and are the original Girling units ..
Could a knowledgeable member please let Me know the optimum spring rating and correct position for daily use ?

Thank You in advance ,
Steve..

Hi,

Even though original, the springs could have lost some of their 'springyness'.  When you sit on the bike how far down does the back of the bike go with the unit on its softest setting.  It probably has 4" of travel so about an 1" is probably OK.  Much more and you should try the next setting.  If on the 'hardest' setting the spring still feels soft than new springs may be needed, otherwise it is down to what you feel comfortable with.  Also, consider the dampers. If there is any sign of oil leakage then the dampers are probably ineffective.
I am just over 12stn and find the softest setting on my A65 ideal when riding solo.

Dave.

I think the best setting is down experiment and depends on individual preference, how the bike is used, road conditions and the condition of the dampers including which rate springs are fitted.
