Title: A65 Chainguards
Post by: ferretjuggler on 15 Jul, 2023, 10:34
I've got a chainguard on its way to me.
The guy I'm getting it from doesn't know what year but from his description it sounds like a '65 to '68 item.
Will I be able to make this fit my '69 swing arm or has some dimension been altered radically ?
Yeah I was going to save up my pennies and buy a brand new quality British made item but the prices seem to have gone silly lately.
Said chainguard is painted not chromed which is not the original spec but good news for me because I can cut it and weld it as required, then hide my sins under a new coat of paint

The originals are far better than the new ones. Mine fractured within a short time of ownership as the nose of the chain guard comes too close to the chain run.

If it's off any of the open loop frame bike with the longer swing arm it will fit fine. The later guard had a support brace at the back.

Thanks Allan.
I checked out a few UK made ones online.
The ones advertised for reasonable prices were all out of stock (surprise).
Actually in stock and on  eBay at around £250 a pop, if you've got deep pockets.
Or take your chance with one from India ?
From what you've told me the one I've scrounged will fit my swing arm, and I can probably fabricate the later type fixing bracket on the press brake at work.
I'm not too fussed about originality at the moment, just want to get the thing registered and running

If it's any consolation, mine was from burton bike bits. Very pretty and good chrome, but I wouldn't buy another.

The strap is easy enough to make, but probably not needed.
