Title: Lubrication system / problem on 1971 oil in the frame A65.
Post by: boriscross on 14 Jul, 2023, 20:21
I had a problem the last time I rode my bike which I am having trouble identifying. A little bit of background the machine now has an SRM upgraded oil pump and an SRM pressure relief valve. I had ridden it before with no problem from the oil system but it had been standing for a while before this ride, it does not however wet sump.
On the ride after a couple of miles i noticed smoke from the front of the engine this got worse and after a while I got a flickering of the oil pressure warning light. The warning light never stayed on just flickered. As the smoking had got worse I pulled in and was taken home by a rescue service.
On investigation I found that the smoke had been caused by oil overflowing from the tank breather but not for some reason down the pipe. It had then been running down the frame backbone and dripping onto the cylinder head and burning. It had for some reason not been going down the breather pipe. Obviously the tank had been filling (over filling) up with oil. although on checking with the oil cold it did not seem to be that full. I have checked the breather system which should now be OK.
On checking the engine lubrication end the two parts of the pressure relief valve were loose. I have now tightened this to the torque advised by SRM. I have also checked all the feed and return pipes. I re-filled with 3 litres of oil and "kicked" the engine over with no plugs in for 150 or so times there was certainly no oil returning. On removing the oil pressure relief valve there was no flow from the feed side of the pump, just a "splatter." I have since re-stripped the timing side removed the pump and checked that, which seems to be OK I have also blown through all the feed and return pipes which do not seem to be blocked. So I not found a problem anywhere. My next planned move will be to replace the pump and oil pipes, trying to prime these where I can. Has anybody got any idea what might be my problem as I've run out of ideas and I don't like to have a problem which I can't find.

Since you retorqued the oprv, does the light go off on tick over when you start it or when kicking it over? 2x kicks and the light on mine has gone out.

For the return, don't worry about it. Providing oil is getting into the engine, it should get to the sump after a few minutes. It will then have something to pump back to the tank. When it does, block the end of the return pipe off for a minute with your finger and that will encourage oil to go to the rockers.

If you remove the sump cover, then you can push a silicone tube or similar over the scavenge pipe, a coffee jar with your chosen oil in will give something to suck up and speed up the scavenge priming process.

If you have the srm sump cover, it says to mount the bolt side to the rear, this puts the magnet awfully close to the scavenge pipe and whilst it "might catch more metal filings" it can and some people have found will pull the scavenge ball down so it won't allow oil return to the tank. It'll eventually throw it out of the breather.

SRM now say position the drain plug on the side furthest away from the scavenge pipe so that is a definite problem.
