Good day all, I have an 1965 A50 fitted with Pazon electronic gizmo and two 6 volt coils as reccomended, fully charged battery new plugs. But the spark is very weak any idear what may be the cause? I am looking along the lines of perhaps new coil?
Bunners
I assume the spark is weak from both coils? If weak on only one side then that could be a problem with that coil or its HT cable or spark plug cap.
If both sides are weak then I would start by measuring the series resistance of both ignition coils which should be ~ 3-4 Ohm. If ok, that would only probably leave the wiring from the ignition switch and the earth for the ignition system that needs to be checked. Simply running separate wires for each and seeing whether this produces a strong spark would be the simplest way of checking this wiring. This all assumes the ignition module has not developed a fault!
Things a lot of people do when wiring these is with the red wires,
you want the red from the box to go to the last + on the second coil (calling the black wire from the black box going to the first coil). you also want a wire from there going back to the battery, or your common earthing point. both the coil and the black box need that good clean connection back to the battery. often you will see a wire going to the coil from the black box but none to battery.
Another thing people do is wire the coils in parelel (like if you were running points) and not in series. the black box is looking to see a total of 3-5 ohms to the black box, so 2 coils in series is between 1.5-2.5 ohms a coil (most 6v coils are about 2 ohms), if you wire 2x 6v coils in parallel then the box will have an impedence of 1 ohm total and the box will blow, similary if you used 2x 6v coils in parallel, the box would see 2 ohms and you would also blow the box (most 12v coils are 4 ohms).
Apart from good spark plug leads and caps .. and plugs
Lastly is good engine grounding, this often becomes an issue with powder coated frames as the paint is so thick and doesn't scrape/flake off the same if at all. you might have to use a file or a blade to scrape some paint off to ensure that the engine has a good ground, or put a wire with a ring terminal under one of the bolt heads.
