Title: Timing the mag on my M20
Post by: DANFINN on 26 Jun, 2023, 18:13
Being a non smoker I don't have any roll up paper, so I have been hunting round for an alternative. Well most of the supermarkets till receipts are .002" or more. However, the good lady popped into L*dl to buy some veg and I ran the mic over this receipt and it appears to be nearer .0015, so a much better bet than tissue that rips and the cig paper, I don't want either. :)

Try the 'window' out of an envelope, works well.

Nothing worked right for me until I gave up and found some Zig Zags.

Get a magneto timing light. You then have both hands free and you can see exactly when the points open. Costs more than a pack of rizlas but definitely worth it.
There are a few on the market, here's one

Thanks Pete,

My brother has one of these, we used it on my Norton model 7. Not as easy it sounds, took me about 10 attempts to get it right as access is very tight at the points. However, the model 7 still gets very hot even though the mag was fully reconditioned. We think the last rebuilder cut corners :(
