Hi gents, I've been reading about tyres here on the forum and it seems Avon Road-riders are a popular all-round choice. I have two questions. Firstly, if most people agree Road-riders are the ones to go for, should I have any preference for standard or Mark II? And secondly, is there any advantage or disadvantage with the old profiles 325 x 19 and 350 x 19 as opposed the modern profiles, such as 90/90 x19 and 100/90 x 19. All your views would be much appreciated.
I have the Avon Roadriders on my Mongrel 600 Goldstar and they are excellent although look a little modern

If it were a B33 rigid/plunger I would probably go Speedmaster Mk II front and rear
3.25x19 ribbed front and 3.50x19 SM rear.
Hi,
Avon Road Riders are my tyres of choice and the Mk2 are probably marginally better on paper but if the standard ones are a bit cheaper then go for those. The imperial sizes will maintain your speedo accuracy. However, some may not be readily available as Avon are ceasing production of, I believe, all tyres.
Similar sizes are available from other manufacturers but I would avoid some of the cheaper ones. Continental, Metzler and Pirelli all seem to cater for classic sizes. Dunlop are also doing classic tyres.
Dave.
As far as I know Dave, the Avon UK Factory is to close, but Avon Motorcycle tyres will still be made somewhere.

My view is a little different and depends on how you are planning planning to ride.
If you are going to ride hard then definatly Avon's but if, like me, you are going to just ride then try Mitas. I have a set fitted to my B31 which gets ridden normally.
I have other bikes if my mood is less sedate some of which have Avons, some have slicks.
The Mitas is a perfectly good tyre and looks the part. It is of modern compound as is the Dunlop SM. The Avon has a more modern look.
Afternoon guys, thanks for the advice. I was already considering the Avons and the comments largely confirm that. I suppose I have no choice other than to go for the "modern" size equivalents if the imperial ones are no longer available. Thanks nagain.
I run a Mitas tyre on the rear of my Shooting Star with no problems.
The Avon Speedmasters to suit your bike are still available:
