Title: 3 speed clutch
Post by: Oily bloke on 07 Jun, 2023, 15:29
Hi all,
Has anyone changed/converted the standard clutch on a 1929 3 speed gearbox fitted to an S29 sloper?
Mine is really grabby on pick up and is spoiling what is , otherwise, a great ride. I intend to do this and have a lathe/mill etc but was hoping that if someone has already done it and was willing to part with some information it may save me some time and expense. The standard clutch is fine from a wear and damage perspective it seems to be an inherent issue with these. I am thinking to fit perhaps a Triumph or Norton clutch. I have a couple of NEB clutches but they wont fit within the existing case but that is not beyond the realms of doo-able!
Cheers
Andy

I have the standard clutch on my 29 sloper and it is as smooth and easy to operate as any on my later bikes. I have no reason or desire to change mine.

I have had my 1929 Sloper for over 40 years and the clutch has always been smooth. This 6 spring clutch is fitted to a lot of 1930's BSA's. My Y13, which I have had since 1989, has an almost identical clutch. A few years ago it began to snatch on pulling away. Investigation found the the channels/grooves in the main clutch housing had become notched where the outer clutch plates fitted into the housing. I carefully filed the channels smooth and it cured the problem. Hopede this helps.
