Title: Headlight Nacelle overhaul on C15
Post by: Barnsey on 27 May, 2023, 18:29
Hi Folks,
I am fitting anew loom to my C15 and would like to tidy up the headlight nacelle while I am about it.

The KPH speedo is wrong. Could someone please tell me what style should be fitted? Likewise the ammeter as I would like them to match.
Could someone please tell me what size the three nuts and bolts which hold the headlight to the nacelle are?  Mine are three different types and at least one is metric (doh!)

The nacelle has been hand painted with something like Hammerite.   I intend to rub down and respray it as replacements appear to be thin on the ground, but if anyone had a new looking one for sale I might be interested.
Annoyingly the forks are similarly painted but they can wait for now.

  Please see the photo attached.

   Thanks,
     Ian

The 3 little nuts and bolts are, I think 4ba.
You can find mph smiths Speedometer, but they tend to be pricy, what about recalibration this one with strategic speeds eg 30,40 converted from kph.

That is an interesting thought.

I am finding that a modern Smiths dial can be bought for around £50 but it is a different style.   That nineteen sixties style speedo, in MPH guise,  seems to go for more like £150, which I am loathe to pay.

I hope that speedo hasn't already been recalibrated, which could lead to much confusion on my part.

Any suggestions for a recommended recal service would be appreciated.

Well 50kph =30 mph
60kph =40 mph
I'd put little paint marker or sticky markers
Kph , divide by 8 then multiply by 5 = mph

Well, my investigations suggest that the speedo which I have is correct for the bike albeit in KPH.  I've also seen a few pictures of C15s with a white speedo and a black ammeter, so maybe this is also correct, although slightly odd.

I think the best plan is to focus on fitting the loom and get the bike running so I can test ride it.  If I decide that I want to keep the bike then I will do the speedo and fit a new saddle cover too, total cost around £200. I don't think that would add £200 to the value of the bike, so better to do those things if it is for me.

I believe the C15 came with a grey faced speedo and probably a white faced ammeter. My C15 speedo is grey faced but I had to fit a black faced replacement ammeter because white ones weren't available. In contrast, my B40 is fitted with a black faced speedo but that is possibly because it started life as a police bike otherwise its speedo would probably have also been grey.

Thanks Spaceman!

That confuses things a little.  So alll the bikes with white speedos and black ammeters are that way due to the lack of availability of grey ammeters.

Maybe I shouldn't focus too much on originality. That way madness lies!

Would the ammeter have been something like this?

As far as I can see, the later side point C15's certainly used a grey faced Smiths SSM type speedo, The earlier ones used a range of pre-SSM Smiths speedos but I can't convince myself that they were all grey faced and that a particular model did not use a black faced speedo. However, consulting the Lucas catalogues, it looks as though all the ammeters fitted to C15's were probably black faced.
