Has anyone here fitted later model oil forks to a pre 1971 frame. If so is it just a matter of different bearings or does the frame need machining work?
I have found that SRM supply replacement bearings so that later model yokes & forks can be fitted.
I had a quick look at the conversion. The SRM bearings look as though they might solve that part of the problem but how do the lengths of the steering head columns compare and in particular the distances between the upper and lower bearings. I may be wrong but comparing the scale drawings seems to show the OIF column was slightly longer?
That's interesting, I would have thought SRM would be aware of that. I will contact them and see if they know.
I forgot about this thread :-\
The answer I got from SRM about fitting them.
You need our part number- SRMTR8 & no machining is required.
I bought a set of forks which had been fitted to a pre oif A65, the PO (an engineer who was very clever with these Brit bikes now RIP) had fitted a spacer under the bottom bearing. The SRM bearing looks to have the spacer already fitted and encompassing the oil seal mentioned. A good idea!
One thing to check is the lock stops match up with those on the bracket. My engineering friend had modified a standard one so that the yoke matched up with it with a thick pad welded to the bracket.
