Title: New PRV Problem
Post by: Superrocket on 15 May, 2023, 19:01
Hi Guys,
Just bought a new stainless steel PRV for my 59 super rocket, it goes in about 7 or 8 mm and stops dead, any body else had the same problem.
thats about the same depth as the old one was, the port is deep enough to take it but noyhing has been all the way down it since 1958.
regards
Super Rocket

l've not had the problem but would be tempted to take the PRV out and use a strong torch to have a look at the thread. You'd be amazed what people try and stick bits in with. If the thread is ok you may be able to remove obstructions CAREFULLY with a jewellers screwdriver or at least see what the problem is.

Is it a SRM prv?
The threads in the casing can get strained so its a good idea to run a tap down the thread.

It seems a common problem with the ones they supply.

Morning Guys
Sorted out the PRV with the help of the guys at SRM, fitted the new oil pump, the rocket fired up second kick and within fifteen minutes the entire contents of the oil tank were blowing out of the crank case breather, that was the reason I fitted the new pump and PRV to stop all that, no wonder BSA went bust, ive now have a BSA living under a tarpauline for the rest of my natural. 12 months of work comes to nothing.
Regards, superrocket.

Your problem didn't  cause the demise of BSA that happened 10 years later. When you start the bike does oil return to the tank? How long since it was started. It may have wet sumped, if so it will pump the out of the breather. Unfotunatley the anti wet sump ball can only be accessed by splitting the engine. Are the oil pipes fitted the right way round. Have you the right thickness of Cork washer on the timed breather. Is the ball free in the end of the pickup pipe in the sump? If not no oil will return to tank.

Hi
Thanks for your help, we had the same problem six weeks ago the bike has been fine up to then it wet sumped while riding and blew the oil out the cylinder head, luckily no damage, a few gaskets and hours all good. fitted a new srm pump and prv stared no problem and then it wet itself again. Yes plenty of oil returning to the tank, oil lines checked, all seemed ok. now looking at an engine strip, not necessarily a bad thing can all the jobs in there that you would and hope fully get to ride again one day.

It would seem that the oil is not being scavenged from three sump.fast enough. Drop the plate from the bottom of the engine and see if the ball inches end of the pipe can be pushed back

Hi,

When you drop the sump plate you may find that 'popeye's' pipe come adrift.  This allows the oil level to increase significantly before there is any scavenging. There will be a lot more oil getting flung about and more forced out of the breather.
