I want to pick the brains of you ladies and gentlemen, restoring a D3 bantam with a D7 engine and I am sorting out the stuff to have re-chromed and the parts I need to replace.
Problem with the kickstart, the one that I have has the part that you put your foot on should be a screw in part to fit the splined part.
I have looked in both the D3 and D7 Parts books and neither show a screw in part, they are either all in one bit or a folding kickstart, question is, will all the D range bantams fit each other, spline wise?
If you looks at the D1/D3 and D7 parts books, you can see that the kickstart shaft (90-0088) is the same on all these models so the spline on which the kickstart lever sits will be the same.
Spaceman, sorry it is probably the way I described it, it's not the spline but the actual part that the foot pushes down on to start the bike.
Mine is a screw in, the parts books (to me) show either a fixed one piece item or on a pivot.
The one I have, someone has used a long bolt with lots of nut screwed onto the thread to replace the kickstart lever.
Hope this is a better explanation, don't know how to describe it better because the kickstart is not shown in two pieces in the parts manuals.
In answer to your Q regarding other kickstarts fitting ... basically yes! The B175 version has a larger spline so won't fit and some of the early ones are straight so will hit the silencer on an anything D5 onwards.
I had a lever with a screw in part, it wasn't really up to the job, the one piece, cranked version is what you need, I think it's 3/4" on the splines (and the B175 one is 7/8").

The splined part of the kickstart lever should fit on any Bantam D1 - D14 since the engine shaft (90-0088) is the same for all of them. In this case, it would be useful to see a picture and am curious to see whether this started life as a proper fixed lever but broke and has since been repaired? In terms of using a kickstart lever off one model Bantam on another, the main consideration is probably whether the bend in the shaft provides the correct clearance to the exhaust when you try to kick the bike over?
Here goes, let's see if it works.
As said, the kickstarter foot peg may have broken off and someone has just drilled and tapped the lever to accept a new screw-in foot peg. Repairing this kickstarter lever would require access to a lathe to machine a new foot peg otherwise a new or second-hand kickstart lever would be the only option.
I started cleaning the motor up at the week end and found the the kick start looks like it has been rubbing on the casing, which brings me back to the pictures above, is that the correct kick start for a D7 engine, does anyone know?
When you say rubbing against the casing, do you mean just in the area around the spindle or are you referring to higher up the casing where the lever part has been rubbing?
It looks like the correct part ... but if is rubbing the primary case close to the spindle it may be simply the wrong pinch bolt is being used. If memory serves the bolt should actually screw into the kickstart and not have a nut. If a nut is fitted it can indeed rub the casing. It could also be the bolt head doing the rubbing, in this case the kickstart is probably too upright and needs removing and replacing in a more laid back position(!).
Hi, it is the casing around the spline area only and yes it looks like a bolt head or nut may have done the damage. My question was around the shape of the kick start.
My original post was because the kick start that was on the bike had a stud full of nuts, but I want to replace it.
On my D14, the pinch bolt screws into the kickstart lever from the front and the bolt head only comes close to the outer cover when the lever is vertical. Because the cover slopes inwards behind the lever, the clearance for the bolt head increases as the lever is operated.
OK, I have got that thanks spaceman, so I guess what you are saying is that any kick start with a bend and 3/4 spline will fit?
Apart from fitting the 3/4" spline, the main consideration is to have enough bend to allow the kickstart lever to clear the silencer. On my D14, the lever is bent to provide about 2.5" of outward displacement of the end of the lever measured from the outer cover.
and the triangular bracket on the rear fixing goes INSIDE the pillion footrest bracket
Thank you both, so if I get a kick starter with the same amount of offset which is on my existing one, I should be OK.
Because there is no evidence that the kick start that I have has rubbed on anything.
Hi
I thought it might be helpful to have a photo of a known Bsntam kickstart. This is a spare I've got.
Hi just got back to this thread, I wasn't aware there were two pages, Studbaker do you want to sell the spare kickstart that you have?
Stubaker58 a thousand apologies, don't know how I got your name wrong.
Hi
No worries!
If you PM me your address I'll send the kickstart over. If it's any good to you we can agree a price.
Regards
Hi Ladies & Gentlemen, just to let you know that my kick starter drama is over and I am the much wiser, thanks to Stubaker58.
