Title: B31 cylinder fin repair
Post by: watts on 11 Apr, 2023, 22:04
Hello

One of the fins on the barrel has bit missing is it possible to get it repaired?  It is not a huge bit missing so is it just cosmetic?
I do not have the missing part.

Thanks
Matthew

Out of interest, which bit of fin is missing and how big is it? A picture would be useful. I've repaired the odd bits of fin on cast iron cylinder barrels before now. Top or bottom bits of fin are fairly easy to repair by welding in a new bit of mild steel because you can get to the joint fairly easily. For more difficult to get at fins, I have just tack welded the new bit of fin on at either end.

Here a couple of pictures, they need a good clean.  Unfortunately it is 3 down and where the stud passes through.
I could just paint it and ignore it.
Thanks

I've done a similar fin repair in the past by shaping a suitable piece of mild steel and then welding it at each end to the existing fin. I've never tried it but soldering the new piece on might work requiring only a blow torch, solder and flux.
