Title: Daft question?
Post by: Cmcl.1959 on 10 Apr, 2023, 11:34
Hi,
I want to change the gear change quadrant on my 1965 Rocket(again).
The splines on the original are worn and affecting gear changes. Last time I did this I had already drained the oil from the gear box and the main oil tank.
As the gear box has a separate supply, can I do this job without draining the main oil tank as it seems a waste of good oil, bearing in mind I need to take off the outer timing side cover and the gear box cover.

Thanks
Clarke

Hi Clarke,
If the bike is not 'wet sumping' you will just lose a minimal amount of oil. Just put a 1/2 pint back into the crankcase before starting to give the rockers etc. lubrication on the start up. If the bike is 'wet sumping' obviously the loss is dependent on the time the repair takes.

I would just proceed without draining the oil tank with a drip tray underneath and top up if required.

Best wishes...

Just clamp the oil tank feed pipe if you are worried about oil flowing to the engine once you've taken off the engine covers. Normally the non-return valve behind the oil pump will stop any leakage into the engine. I personally have no qualms about returning oil I've drained from the engine back into the oil tank!

Hi Clarke,
I wouldn't recommend clamping the oil pipes on an A10, or if they are old or maybe brittle..

Best wishes...

I saw the reference to 1965 and assumed it was an A65! You definitely don't want to try an clamp an A10 armoured oil feed cable!
