Title: what engine oil is best for 1961 B40
Post by: Cargers on 08 Apr, 2023, 20:50
Hello,
the reccomended oil for my B40 is SAE 30 according to the manuals. Are modern multigrade oils suitable and if so what grade?
Ian.

Hi Ian,
A 20W/50 will be okay in a newly built engine, I won't try it in an engine that's been run on its recommended oil or you don't know its history. They will give higher oil consumption.

Best wishes...

Although the engine oil does not get to the clutch on a B40, I would still recommend using a JSAO MA2 spec oil which is designed for wet clutch engines. That way, you can also use it in the chaincase. I also always use straight mineral oil bit I am sure a semi-synthetic oil would be ok provided the engine is well run in.
