Title: Tire Wear
Post by: Jim S on 24 Mar, 2023, 16:10
Hello
I have a 3.50-19 K70 tire on the back of my B33 and I'm wondering if it is time to replace it. In the photo below, there is 0 depth on the circumferential groove at the black dot location only. The remainder of the circumferential groove (red dot) has a depth of 0.050in all the way around. At the yellow dot, the tread depth is 0.125in.

Except for the circumferential groove, the tire looks like it has some service life remaining. I don't see any wear bars in the tread commonly seen on car tires or is the circumferential groove the wear indicator?

I would appreciate some opinions.

I have a replacement tire (not a K70) standing by.

Jim

The Highway Code says that on bikes there should be a continuous circumferential groove that has to be at least 1.6mm/ 0.06" deep. You are already past that, and though the chances of getting a ticket are slim, if I were you I'd now be looking to put the new tyre on .

I thought the same but looking at the Highway Code dated 26/7/2022, it says:

"Motorcycles, large vehicles and passenger-carrying vehicles MUST have a tread depth of at least 1 mm across three-quarters of the breadth of the tread and in a continuous band around the entire circumference."

Surprisingly, this indicates for motorcycles that the minimum tread depth is 1 mm / 0.04" - the 1.6 mm applies to cars!

Thanks Rog1 and Spaceman

I also found Tread Wear Tips on the Dunlop site. See the attached screen shot.

The portion of the circumferential groove with no depth (the black dot) aligns with a tread wear bar alignment indicator on the sidewall. In fact, on closer examinaton, there are several wear bar alignment indicators on the sidewall of the tire and at each location there is no center groove depth.

My tires are done!
