Title: A65 tick over problem
Post by: simon.d.hewitt@gmail.com on 22 Mar, 2023, 20:38
My 1972 A65L is now running. A new Pazon ignition worked excellently and mostly starts first or second kick. When started from cold, tickover is fairly steady, with a little stuttering. But I filled up with petrol and left the taps open, would not start until a lot of kicking - leaking floats valves?
And after running about 10 miles, if I pull the clutch in, the engine stops. Starts OK if I let the clutch out again, pulls nicely (still running in). A bit of throttle blipping at junctions and it settles down again - any ideas?

The Amal concentrics have been professionally refurbished (not by me), looks OK with close fitting brass sleeves, very little slop or rattle.

Thanks

One of the bikes I used to ride was always sensitive to having the petrol taps left on - I learned very early on to switch off the petrol when I filled up at the pump otherwise it was a pig to start again. As far as I was concerned, there was nothing wrong with the carb.

In terms of stalling after 10 miles, I think you are saying that, when warm, the tick over is not very reliable? If so, it's probably just a case of adjusting the idle mixture after the engine has been fully warmed up - the technique for doing this can be found on the web. If this adjustment does not solve the problem then a leaking inlet manifold or a carb problem might need to be considered?

OK Thanks
part 1 - yes, getting used to British bikes again, switch off the petrol taps, no high pressure fuel pump to the fuel injectors!

Part 2 - yes, I have only just got it going so it probably needs fine tuning. From cold it ticks over like a train, but I cannot yet trust it as lights etc.
