Does anyone know of a source for a rear brake operating rod wing nut suitable for a 1934 500 Blue Star W34-9? The original part number was 15-7985.
Alternatively, if someone has an original fitted then a photo and some overall dimensions would be appreciated.
Thanks, David
David, Can't be much help to you on this one, but if you search the internet for Bonhams.com lot 421 L32-5 Blue Star, and can enlarge the photo, I am pretty certain the wing nut is original. Hopefully, this might help you with scale.
Most of the brass wing nuts available seem to have quite small ears, but I think if you search, you will find one that is close to the original. The main problem is the length of the 'body', but maybe you could fabricate a short brass/bronze tube and silver solder it on to the nut? The nut thread would need recutting to 5/16 cycle. I imagine they would have been cadmium plated, but I see the one in the photo is black. It depends on how original you need it to be.
Thanks again Steve. I just made up a stainless steel 5/16" brake rod this evening - it may have originally been 3/8" turned down to 5/16 on the end, but it looks like there's no definitive answer. Yes, I was thinking the same about silver soldering a sleeve to a modern brass wing nut, certainly less effort than making one from scratch.
Draganfly list the wing nut with that part number
Thanks BRM. If I needed more stuff from Draganfly I'd order a wing nut, but I've decided to make one from scratch - after cogitating on the problem it seemed easier to make one than to modify an existing wing nut.
Here is a pic of wing nut on my 1934 350cc Blue Star.
The round bar is 7/8" in length and 1/2" diameter the wing nut wings are 1 1/2" wide tip to tip.
Total length 1".
Many thanks for the photo. I'm pleased to say that the one I made matches pretty well.
