Title: A10 1961 Golden Flash - lights work - then when engine runs no lights
Post by: blackeyeian on 03 Mar, 2023, 16:02
Hi  Any Ideas of how to track & fix the fault
Without engine running the lights work fine.  Then when the engine is fired up and running - NO LIGHTS.
Can anyone give me an idea of where to start & how to trace the fault ?
Could it be a simple lighting switch problem ?
I am useless with electrics.
Kind Regards
Ian

First off: what's the history of the problem? Was the electrics working fine and have just stopped working or is this a bike that has not been run for some time and you are trying to get it working again?

I suggest starting by disconnecting the regulator output from the battery - this means disconnecting the brown/white wire from terminal A on the regulator box. You may be able to do this easily if there is a snap connector on the other end of the wire.

With the regulator disconnected, the engine should then have absolutely no effect on the lights that should run off battery power with or without the engine running. Depending on what you find when you disconnect the regulator will determine the next step required in diagnosing the problem.

Thank you Spaceman
The bike was working fine 3 months ago, with the lights ok when the bike was running.
I removed the seat and charged up the battery - now the light problem.
I will remove the connection from the regulator this weekend when the cold and snow have improved.
I can't seem to find a separate fuse for the lights - so that can't be an intermitant problem.
