Title: Wooden plug
Post by: MITCHELL on 28 Feb, 2023, 18:23
Hi, this is strange. Again preparing crank cases I found a hole blocked with a wooden plug this can't have happened by accident anyone have any ideas.

Looks like the crankcase breather hole.

Someone had a problem not that long ago with too much oil emerging near the gearbox sprocket and then dripping down on to the ground. If I remember correctly, they assumed it was coming out of the breather hole that you can see connects to the end of the camshaft where the timed breather valve is. It's possible a previous owner of this bike had the same problem and his solution was to block up the hole he thought the oil was coming out of, perhaps, not realising it was the breather outlet.

Thanks both, will get it all cleaned up and I think I'm ready to start assembling which means there's probably going to be a barrage of queries.Dave.

 :) :) :) :)

I had the same problem. With use of a torch and mirror I established that the oil was not coming from there and I still cant find it. The only place left to examine is the primary chain breather/chain oiler. I'm not of a mind to strip primary side at the mo.But I suspect that the chain case my be pressurised to a small degree as a result of the crank shaft oil seal "blowing" slightly.

We'll see

The worst thing that covers that part of the engine with oil is not the crankcase breather but the so called rear chain oiler at the rear end of the primary chaincase. It has a banjo and pipe and a constant drip of chaincase oil with soak that part of the bike dripping off when the bike is stationary.
A quick fix is to loosen the banjo and turn it skywards.

If the leaking oil is not coming out of the breather then, logically, it is either coming out of the gearbox or out of the chaincase. I can't remember whether this has already been tried but using dye in the gearbox oil and the chaincase oil in turn will tell you which it is. Obviously, check it's not coming out of the chain oiler first!

If gearbox oil or chaincase oil (but not the chain oiler), it will obviously need a big strip down to get at the relevant seal and shaft.
