Title: Help! What wheel is this??? Need a drum...
Post by: DrSweden on 23 Feb, 2023, 19:12
Just bought this 19" wheel, without serials, but the drum brake is missing, only the plate and need they complete assembly. The drum is about 190 mm in width, the drum plate is 195 mm on the inside and 200 mm on the outside? Is this and B31 front wheel?

I'm not an expert but it does like a mid-1950's B31 front wheel. Unfortunately, the brake plate looks to be a bit mutilated and am not sure what the extra holes are there for?

Thank you, hopefully someone can confirm, and yeah, brake plate is gone, need a new one for sure.

It's difficult to be completely sure from the pictures but the wheel axle also looks to be completely wrong. On the B31, the axle is threaded at one end to screw into the right-hand fork leg whereas this one appears to have nuts at either end.

The B31 spindle will normally have a hole at one end for a tommy bar and a left hand thread at the other for screwing into the off-side fork leg.

Yes, I noticed this as well. Tried to find the wheel by going via the axle size, no luck. It's 10 mm in diameter, but it's an axle going inside another axle/tube. This wheel came from a Harley chopper guy, and has probably been adapted to just that? I'm going to see what kind of diameter the outher tube has, to see if there's a correlation between wheel bearings to some BSA. Damn, this was crazy hard.

Wheel looks m20 or b31...

I believe the correct axle is 11/16" or 17.5 mm in diameter.

The B31 spindle goes through a split sleeve fitted to the nearside fork leg. This sleeve is omitted on the leg for an 8 inch brake as the spindle is larger in diameter.
