I have a 1930 model (first registered in 1929) B30-4 which I have had for a number of years and have now decided to sell due to my advanced years and declining health. The problem is that I have never seen another one advertised for sale and so I have no idea how. Cut it is worth. Can anyone give me any guidance please?
Thanks in hope
Les
Hi Les. I bought mine in 2019 for $8000 Aud. I was wondering if you knew how much oil it held. I tried to put in 2 1/2 pints like the manual states but I only got in just over 2 pints before oil ran everywhere.
Les,
I would have thought between £5000 and £6000. Later single port B2's seem to be selling for £4000 to £5000, and my view is that the earlier twin port is more desirable, the engine being the basis for the later Blue Star Junior.
Partly depends on condition, eg unrestored, original engine and frame, mudguards, BSA levers and twistgrips, original registration number.
If so, perhaps a tad more.
This is only my personal opinion.
Max, I had exactly the same problem, and this was with a newly built dry engine. However, as far as I can gather, BSA state that the engine cannot be overfilled, i.e the sump is filled to near the top of the filler spout. However, on my engine, if I do that, the engine smokes badly. I can only think this is because upper part of the crankcases are not sealing, allowing oil from the sump to enter the crankcase proper.
You should have a dipstick on your filler cap, and I now fill mine up to the 1/2 mark and all is well. I wonder if Les has any problems?
Hi Steve.S
Mine didn't have a dip stick so I have put one on. If I fill it too full like you say, it blows out oil everywhere. When you say you fill it to Half way, how far down from the top is that. If I know then I can put a mark on my new dipstick.
Max,
From the boss on the filler cap, the length of the dipstick is 7 7/16" (190mm).
1 1/2 is marked 1/2" (12.5mm) from the bottom end.
There is a straight line mark 2 1/8" (54mm) from the bottom end, which I assume is a 1 pint mark.
Finally, 1/2 is marked 3 7/8" (99mm) from the bottom end.
Hope this makes sense.
Note that the instruction book states that the markings indicate how much oil needs to be added to the sump, and not how much oil is in the sump.
I only fill mine up to a little below the 1/2 mark.
"Priced at £5,850. Registered new on the 14th of April 1930 ... this nice example is particlarly rare as it has a single port engine".

Thank you for that information. Will give it a try.
