I need to make a battery carrier for my '34 500 BS but need some dimensions of the bracket 15-6290, the left and right hand stays 15-6291/2 and the "mounting block" 15-6293 of which there appear to be two. Some photos would also be enormously appreciated.
See attached from the '34 parts book.

I am assuming that you are using the T shaped battery. I really struggled on this and eventually made mine by taking measurements from pictures etc. The result is shown in the picture. I think that the original blocks may have had rubbers to carry the mounting pillars from the battery. I substituted these for studs onto the mounting clips. I think Cornucopia did these. There is also a w shaped clip that wraps around the twin down tubes to take the main battery bracket.
Measurements are difficult at the minute as the bike is vac-packed for another few weeks.
Hope this helps
Many thanks BRM. Yes, my machine should be fitted with the t-shaped battery which should arrive tomorrow. I'll try and work out the dimensions using some cardboard and the photos - as long as it works and looks convincing I'm sure no one will be the wiser.

I just noticed that your machine (if it is yours in the photo) has a rockerbox enclosed inlet valve from a later machine. Did this fit straight on without modification (assuming the '34 head of course)?
David
My bike came as a real basket case. It is a 1935 model with matching numbers but the tank is 34 and earlier. My plan was was swap the tank as and when one turned up.
In answer to your question about the rocker box, mine is correct for year. The head is different to accept the enclosed rocker box.
As I mentioned in my earlier post my bikes are is in storage. I will be getting them out in a few weeks time and I can take measurements.
I found another picture of the parts.
Thanks again BRM. Have you considered one of the Indian made tanks? I've heard mixed things about them, but generally more positive than negative. A friend has bought three with one being returned and exchanged for a decent example. I would buy one myself, but they don't do the earlier style that you presently have. I'd happily buy your old tank for whatever it costs to buy a new one.
David
I have considered an Indian tank, but mine is hand change. The only one you can get is for the Q8. I think this is the correct shape but the tank rubber knee grip mounts are wrong, there are no mounts for the hand change (I think that this could be overcome) and the fuel filler cap is the later non threaded style.
Mmm... what a pain. Your tank wouldn't suit my machine either since it's foot change.
When you release your machine from captivity BRM, could you measure the battery carrier parts for me please?
Thanks, David
No problem
Many thanks, David
David.
Do you still need some battery carrier dimensions?
The bike is out of its covers.
Yes please BRM. I hope to get on with the battery carrier next week having made the headlamp brackets and horn brackets.
Thanks, David
Ok. Bear on mind that I went through the same process as you. The battery holder works but dimensions may not be 100% as per original.
Understood BRM, and thanks again. David
Please find attached. I apologise for spelling mistakes!
That's great thanks BRM, much appreciated.
David
This is what it should look like. I have an original which I copied for my other bikes. It is a lot of work to make.
Thanks, that's really helpful. Could you take some measurements for me? I'm guessing the material is 1x1/8" (25x3mm).

Hello BRM. I'm only just getting around to making my battery carrier and just had a quick question about batter clips. My case came without clips, but I notice that your look like the bottom part has a rod bent up at the ends to go into a couple of holes under the battery "T". My case just has the same shallow depression under the T as on the removable lid.
Thanks
David
Attached is a picture from the Cornucopia website.
If you select Norton, click on the Big 4 model and scroll down, you will see the battery and clips. It shows some good pictures. They also have them but not cheap!
Thanks for the post about the clips BRM. For some reason I stopped getting notifications of new posts.
I started making the battery carrier as per your specs - thank you again. One thing that perplexes me though is what actually holds the battery in place? It appears to just perch on the two metal blocks with nothing preventing it from moving fore and aft. Is this right? Seems like whoever at BSA was tasked with mounting the battery did it on a Friday afternoon after a liquid lunch!
I believe that the battery was rubber mounted on two spikes coming from the blocks into the underside of the tee shape. I used two 5/16 studs from the blocks instead.
Hi have original lucas t shape battery and still hold charge it has two bolts from top from battery that go into battery carrier
Thanks both - I realised that it was bolted down in some way and did the same as you BRM only with 1/4" bolts. I'll post some pics when I've finished. I'm going to secure the lid with some close fitting internal tabs rather than muck about with clips.
