I need to procure a rear wheel for my '69 A65.
A good crinkle hub and fittings would seem to be the logical first step, I'll sort out the rim and spokes later on.
Various eBay listings seem to contradict each other.
Some suggest that all the hubs are the same from the contemporary unit singles and twins alike.
Others seem to suggest that the singles hubs are somehow different.
Can someone please enlighten me on this subject ?
And finally what wears or fails on them ?
Wheel bearings obviously but will be replaced anyway.
The drive splines ? I'd think that well worn splines would be pretty easy to spot.
I think that I can vaguely remember there being an issue with failing welds at very high milages.
I've no idea if this really is a problem ?
Anyone got any experience of this ?
The crinkle hubs from the plunger and swinging arm A and B series are different although I have modified a plunger one to fit a swinging arm. Not being that well up on the unit twins, but one thing is the speedo drive which comes off the rear wheel. None of the pre- unit BSAs had the drive from there, so I would think that you would need to look at unit crinkle hubs. It looks as if apart from wheel sizes that all the later hubs were the same. Spindle sizes may be different though.
Just comparing parts books for a 1969 A65 and B44, there are some similarities between the rear hub assemblies but some obvious differences including the brake drum assemblies although the hubs themselves are the same. I'm not sure whether the parts diagrams can be taken literally but one shows the sprocket on the outside of the drum flange and the other on the inside of the drum flange. I'd have to look at my bikes to check whether this is actually the case.
Thankyou both.
I've got a lead onto a hub from what I am told was a Triumph TR25W - basically a B25 Starfire in disguise.
I don't think that these appeared until 1968 so they would have the speedo drive flange fitted.
My only concern is that the axle diameter might be smaller than the A65 item and that could possibly work out more expensive than buying the correct hub.
I'm pretty sure that I've got a B25 parts book floating around somewhere but I'll be damned if I can lay my hands on it.
I'm thinking that the parts numbers for the wheel bearings may confirm axle diameter.
I think that the female splined flange is probably going to be universal but brake drums and sprockets will differ from model to model
:) :) :) :)
Looking at Drags, all the A50/A65 crnklies were the same throughout the build inc speedo drive. The B40 drive flange is the same so it would be a relatively??? good guess that the crinkly bit is the same. For the B40 drags dont give a seperate Pt No for the hub. It gives a unit no for hub, rim and spokes. My guess is that they are the same.
Best.

Hi,
The splined ring that bolts on back of the brake drum is the replaceable part and is probably softer than the part in the hub. Replacing the ring should restore the fit to a reasonable degree unless both are really knackered and have been used without grease.
Dave.
The hub spacer (67-6027) and hub itself (41-6022) were the same parts on the 1969 A65, B44 and B25 and so the axle diameter and bearings will be the same.
