Dear All,
After resting in my garage for 40 years i have finally got round to looking at my Starfire.
Currently my attention is the front fork.its a 6 3/4 inch center fork with twin leading shoe brake.it is the shuttle valve fork.
I am attempting to replace the fork oil seals. I removed the old ones from the holder. These were fairly rubbery and hence had some flexibilty when digging them out.
I ordered new ones part number 97-2641 or 29-5313 or 65-5451.
When they arrived they were rubber seals ecased in hardened rubber/plastic. I see from other parts suppliers that they all look the same.
The problem is that being hard with no give then it seems unlikely that they will be able to fit into the slots provided within the chrome seal holders, even using BSA special service tool.
What i think i need are fork oil seals which are similar to the ones i pulled out ie seals which are made out of rubber throughout and hence will allow some degree of manipulation to push them home. Its suggested in the workshop manual that the seals are installed from the bottom of the holders. I struggle to see how this is possible with these hard plastic seal.
I wonder if others have had this issue? If so how did you resolve it. Are there fork seals available which are not of hard outer material for this part number.
I hope someone can assist and point me in the right direction.
Regards
Dunc
