Title: Do I need a steering damper on a dry frame A65 ?
Post by: ferretjuggler on 28 Jan, 2023, 23:26
The set of S/H yokes I bought have a solid top nut with no hole for a steering damper shaft.
So I'm wondering if I really need to fit one on my 67 framed A65.
I'm told that these bikes handle pretty well but the last time I actually rode one was possibly 1979 maybe.
Seemed to handle well if I recall but the brakes didn't do anything much.

I believe the damper is there for when you have a sidecar attached and is therefore not really needed for normal motorcycle use.

Hi,

Depending on how you use your bike a damper may be useful.  As well as pretty much essential for sidecar use, the damper can be employed when two up, carrying camping gear or both.  Under these circumstances the front end can feel a bit light as there is less weight forward and bit of friction from the damper will calm any tendency for the front end to wander.
