Pretty much at the end of the project and want to get the right oil in the engine.
All the BSA books tell me she 40 monograde with which I'm happy to go
But I think I also saw sae 20-50 , is this beneficial in these bikes please?
Coming to eventually a bit warmer weather, roller big end and this plain timing side bush, do they prefer 40 or the 20-50 please?
Given the lubrication principles in its design but the advent of modern oils?
It's never going to be thrashed, but I want to keep it healthy inside
Thank you
The owners manual at the time recommended SAE 40/50 for summer and SAE 30 or 20W/30 for winter. In principle, its probably best to avoid modern engine oils because they are designed to keep particles suspended in the oil to be removed by a paper inline filter and to use a classic motor engine oil instead. Personally, I'm not that concerned about using modern JASO MA2 oils because any bike I ride is only going to do a low mileage.
Fair enough, 30 for winter and 40 for summer monogrades
And keep it clean
Thank you
Hi,
I know it is a bit harder to 'hide' an external filter on a C15 but as you will have cleaned out the crank sludge trap why not keep it clean.
The filter and a detergent oil will ensure that the contaminants are taken out of the the oil and not left to circulate until caught in the rotating crank.
I suppose though, if only doing low mileage then maybe not worth the bother.
Dave.
Thank you
The external filter by morgo is very small and can be fiited in many places.
