Title: A65 How many oil tank types ?
Post by: ferretjuggler on 20 Jan, 2023, 18:44
I just bought this sorry looking item in the hope that it will fit, or can be made to fit my 1967 A65 frame.
A bit of a puzzle at the moment, as it only has one mounting bracket, and even that has been broken off and had another piece of bracket MIG welded on (badly).
TBH I've no idea how many different types of oil tank were fitted from 1962 until 1970, I'm definitely on a learning curve here.
At present I only have '64 (?) and '69 parts books to work from.
I really don't know what I've bought yet, but I'm hopefully about to find out.

BTW apologies for the photo quality.
If I take a photo on my phone it gets rejected for having too many pixels, so my only solution is to take a photo from further away, then crop it down to size.
Desperate or what ?

can I suggest a trip to one or two web sites and down load free parts books then you can get ideas of what was used on different year bikes.
not being funny here, but Ive got a couple of hard copies on my shelves but have many more parts books stored on various hard drives, not cost any money only a few hours of downloading time.

Hi,

It looks like the later tank.  The earlier ones had a tube for the rocker feed on the tank whereas the later ones had the rocker feed from the oil union under the engine.  The tank should fit but you will have to 'T' in to the return pipe for the rocker feed or use the later union.
The tank only has one actual bolt to keep it in place as it is rubber mounted.  Two rubber pads underneath and the bolt through a rubber bush.  The down side to this is that to get the tank out the mudguard has to be removed.
Page 18 in the earlier parts book and page 22 in the later one should show the differences. The rocker feed from the earlier tank can just be seen in the earlier book.  The later arrangement is meant to be an improvement as the supply pipe is a bit bigger but I do not know what the benefit of changing then rocker feed is.
If you have filter on the return pipe the earlier set up means that the rockers get filtered oil whereas the later on does not.

Dave.

Thankyou both.
I'm seeing two bulges pressed into the bottom face of the tank, I'm assuming that these locate in the mount rubbers.
If it's a late type tank that will do me fine.
It actually seems to be in serviceable condition with maybe some work to the mount tab.
Not often that I buy something dirt cheap and it actually turns out all good

Just use MS Paint and use the Resize function to reduce the number of horizontal pixels to ~1500 or less to get the file size down to no more than 1 MB.
