Title: 1954 BSA B31 Rigid frame plunger rear sprocket
Post by: briancairns on 19 Jan, 2023, 17:37
1954 BSA B31 Rigid frame plunger rear sprocket.

Hi

I am looking to replace the rear  chain sprocket as it is badly hooked.
The break hub seems to be welded to the sprocket.
Would anyone have a part number or know where to find a replacement?
The only part number I can find is for the swinging arm version. Will the swinging arm version fit the rigid frame?

Thanks in advance
Brian

No! Unless you can adapt the QD cotton reel hub. The rear sprocket on the ridged B31s and M20s are riveted to the hub. I believe the answer is to strip the wheel and put the hub in a lathe and machine off the teeth and weld on a ring with the teeth on. I'm dreading that day.

Would anyone have a contact number for John Hemmings? I think he is retired but is still doing sprocket work for bikers.

Thanks

Morning guys, by coincidence I'm currently in the process of dealing with this very issue on my 1947 B33 rigid, part number 65-6250 40T. I'm fortunate to have a very helpful local engineering shop, who (without prompting) advised turning the worn teeth off, making a replacement ring on the CNC machine and carefully Tig welding the new one on. He's now working on this but to get it as near as original, we could do with a drawing of the tooth profile. Does anyone know if this still exists and if so, where to find it?

Brian

I don't understand the configuration you are looking for. Your title says "1954 BSA Rigid frame plunger rear sprocket". Do you have a rigid frame or a plunger frame? I have a 1949 plunger and the plunger configuration is different from the rigid.

If you have a plunger frame, are you looking to replace part number 65-6294? If yes, try British Cycle Supply in Nova Scotia, Canada. I bought a nos part from them about 4 years ago.

Hi Jim,
Apologies its a plunger.
I managed to source one in England from a company called Russell motors, whom have a contact with some one who makes them.
I live in Belfast, Ireland, so this is a much closer contact.
Most BSA motorcycle parts companies can't source them.
Thanks for your help.
