Title: Where to earth?
Post by: Dibble on 11 Jan, 2023, 20:18
Please could someone offer  advice on the best place to earth the harness on my almost completed 67 hornet. Its on original et ignition. Its not the most complicated  wiring diagram in the world i know but its all new to me. The frame is nwly powder coated so i imagine it might prove a pain? Any advice welcome.
DAVE.

Hi,

The purpose of an earth is to complete a circuit back to the battery so if you do not want to remove some powder coating to get to bare metal you could run earth wires back to the battery or a common point under the seat but ensuring that the earth wires all contact the lead back to the battery.

Hi,
On the engine? Use a electrical ring terminal on one of the rocker cover studs, the connection should be nicely hidden.

Best wishes...

For all the bikes I've restored, I normally have a earthing point set up somewhere convenient on the frame under the seat but you need to remove the powder coating to allow good electrical contact between the frame and the earth nut and bolt. One of the bikes I ride has an ET ignition system but with a battery fitted for the lights and this has a common earth point on the frame near the battery. Although the engine usually ends up with a good electrical connection to the frame, it's best to check this is the case. As said, it you don't have lights and battery fitted, then earthing on the engine is probably sufficient.

 :) :) :)

One of the thimgs I now do as a matter of course. is to drill the cross member under the seat to rear of the oil tank and put a nut and bolt in. Easy reach of the battery and very unlikely to rust etc. Then just fix with a second nut and washers to suit. earth lead. Of course its also a spund point for any other necessary earthing.
