I believe the answer is to use thixotropic grease instead of oil.

Hi Howard
I got a friend to cut a shallow groove in the kick-start shaft about a quarter of the way in from the kick start end and then I fitted a thin O ring to the groove. The outer of the O ring should sit just slightly higher than the shaft but not too high that the shaft is too tight in the bush. I greased and fitted the shaft this cured my leak I was using a straight 50 oil in the box at the time . I now use a mix of oil and semi fluid grease which as been fine so far . Hope this helps regards Mark
