Title: B33 Rigid rear mudguard lifting handle/stay
Post by: Geoff Leake on 06 Jan, 2023, 14:53
Afternoon,

Happy New Year and I hope you all stay safe guys!

I'm looking for a lifting handle/rear mudguard stay for my 1947 B33 rigid. The part number is 65-6839 and as far as I can tell from searching online, this is no longer available. A very similar part for the M20, part number 66-6947 is available from both Classic Bike Shop and Draganfly but it appears to be about an inch short between the mounting hole centres - approximately 10-1/2" as opposed to 11-3/8", not to mention the width. Does anybody know where I can find the correct part, or does anybody have a used one kicking around? Also, please let me know if you think I'm being overly-fussy about the difference in length, and if the M20 part will do the job and still look about right?  Cheers.

Hi Geoff. I have a 1946 B31 with the rear stay fitted. I have made such a stay in the past by buying a bent tube of the correct tube outside diameter, width between the stays and adequate length dimensions. You would then need to squeeze the four flats in a vice and drill the four holes. I can let you have any dimensions you need if you go down this route. Keith

Hi Keith, Thanks for the info. I've just checked the parts list and the 1946 B31 and 1947 B33 do in fact have the same part number - 65-6839. It would be very helpful if you could let me have the dimensions of yours, the overall length, the distance between the centres of mounting holes, the width inside the flats and the overall width of the top of the handle. I look forward to hearing from you. Cheers.

Hi. The overall length is 420mm. The distance between the mounting holes is 285mm. The overall width at the top is 160mm. The outside diameter of the tube is 13.5mm.The width inside the flats is difficult to measure with the stay on the bike and the distance between the bottom flats is greater than the top ones as the stays spread out at the bottom. By calculation, the width between the top flats is approximately 133mm. I have measured the best I can. Also note that the bottom flats are pinched in a vice whereas the top ones are beaten down from the outside of the tube to rest against the mudguard. Hopefully these measurements will be accurate enough to see if any stays you are looking at are correct. If you are making the stay from scratch, you may need other measurements. The ready bent tube that I used on another make of bike was rounded at the top whereas the one on our bikes is flattened and just rounded at the ends.
