Title: 1946 B31 Gearbox kickstart return stop rubber
Post by: Keith L on 11 Dec, 2022, 13:50
I haven't been able to buy a decent return stop rubber that lasts very long. I am thinking of replacing it with a brass item which I will shape to fit. I am hoping this will serve the purpose of protecting the aluminium outer gearbox case.

Can anyone offer any thoughts on whether this might work OK?

I would veer away from brass personally.. Regarding the rubber stop the trouble is that anyone can manufacture and supply what looks like the correct part, but not take any time to assess its compatibility with certain oils/additives.  I know the M20 part is available from a few places (24-4261), but I don't know whether your B31 has the same box? as they made another box for the B's during the late 40's I believe.
What about finding a chunk of rubber ( Nitrile or Viton) of suitable hardness that you know will withstand the hammering and oil and shape it to fit the outcover ?

Or maybe consider a chunk of nylon, That which is used for making rollers.
