Title: A10 tank
Post by: topher on 06 Dec, 2022, 21:46
I wonder if anyone could give some ideas as to the original scheme on this A10 tank. There was obviously some chrome panels, the rest is too rusty to make out. I've looked on the 'net for some ideas but haven't found anything that matches. Thanks in advance.

I think it is an early A10 plunger tank with winged badges similar to that shown below:

Yes it's off a 1950 A10. I just wondered about the paint/chrome. I've seen similar pics to the one you show but on my tank it looks like the chrome panel curves around the front of the rubber knee pad rather being on the whole of the side of the tank. It's a minor thing I guess, was just interested how it might have originally looked.

If you're a BSAOC member, you can access the Library files which include comprehensive Catalogues / brochures for all models including A10. On another note (anorak now donned!!), if you're considering a BSA garter transfer for the toolbox bear in mind it will be 'BSA Cycles' not BSA Motorcycles as your machine is pre 1953.  HTH

Sorry, why do you mean by garter transfer?

BTW, I didn't want to sound clever, but I assumed you may want to restore it close to Factory spec? Things like the garter etc, are items that you can 'get one over' the rivet counters when they start!!   ;D

Not too sure about factory spec. Having been in the family for 64 years and laid up for the last 30 (the bike, not me  :P ) I'm quite keen to get it in running order without worrying too much about that, or keeping rivet counters happy  ::)

As I said, I posed the original question more out of interest rather than a desire to get it as it came out the showroom. It looks to me like it had two chrome panels on the side, it looks like there's a division between the badges and knee pads if you look at the pics. And I haven't come across any pictures of a bike with that kind of markings.

Not yet. It's on the to-do list, especially as I will need the dating service to get the bike registered with DVLA again. Hoping I can keep the old number

The only way to add chrome panels to the side of a BSA petrol tank is to start by re-chroming the whole tank - I am sure that is what BSA did. From the pictures of the tank in question, its possible the different parts of the chrome panel have deteriorated at different rates with that under the knee pad having corroding back to bare metal faster.
