Does anybody know anyone who can braze cast iron barrel fins in the Hinckley, Leicestershire area?
It might be worth trying Qualitig in Coventry. He has done some great work for me on steel and alloy but not sure if he has any experience with cast iron.

Have you looked into laser welding?
If you can travel to Ilkeston, try Steve Gagg 07931 987449
The problems with mending barrel fins can be getting access to where the old fin broke off. Top and bottom fins are not normally a problem but trying to mend intermediate fins might be limited to relatively narrow slivers having been broken off? It would be interesting to know what the extent of the damage is here?
sometimes, its easier to cut the outer fins off then weld on the middle one then progress back up or down .
its always best to seek a welder with experience of welding older castings as they can crack the castings with too much heat without some pre heating.

I would VERY carefully build them up with oxy acetylene Using a high quality Cast iron flux and and old pston rings a filler rod, Cos they are the best cast you can get.
If I need to put large parts on I weld Mild steel into place.
Then its in the lap of the gods. If it lasts the first 10 miles its usully OK.
But in truth I wont weld cast for anyone else, not even my bestie.

With a bit of luck this should show some pichers of welding fins on m20 Head. The head was bolted to a piece of 6 or 8 mm plate to avoid distortion.

repirs on fins ive done in the past have been done with a drill. drill through the fin and tap the fin below the broken one, also tap the broken fin a size bigger and insert a threaded pin into both , and to hide the pin i put rubber spacers in there like they have on some ld mx engines.
