Title: B25 wet sumping sufficient to prevent starting
Post by: Trebor on 10 Nov, 2022, 10:53
Hi all

Need some advice, I have a 69 B25 engine that runs and starts fine if I start it every week, however any period longer than this and the wetsumping prevents the engine from starting. I have fitted a drain screw to the sump cover which allows me to drain the oil out quickly but I would like to fix the problem.

Things I have done include:-

Removal of the oil pump cleaned and replaced with new gasket
Removed the scavenge return valve , stripped and cleaned and re-seated ball.
Removed and cleaned both oil pressure valves and re-seated
Replacement of "O" ring at the joint face of the inner timing cover.

I know I could fit an anti wetsumping valve in the feed line but would rather fix the problem.

Has anyone else had this issue? Am I missing something.

Any advise would be appreciated.

Rob

First, when you say both oil pressure valves, do you mean both non-return valves (NRV) including the feed NRV in the inner timing cover?

In principle, the oil is draining either past the oil pump, past the O-ring between the crankcase and the inner timing cover, or past the feed NRV. With the inner timing cover off, if you plug the oil feed hole in the crankcase, you can test to see if the oil drain you experience is still there - in which case, it is via the oil pump otherwise suspect one of the other two possibilities.
