Title: Tool Quality
Post by: Milemuncher on 05 Nov, 2022, 17:16
Hi all,

Just purchased a Fork Seal Holder remover tool (from a supplier that I have purchased from before (and 'Made in England') as I could only move the holders so far by hand.

However, this tool seems to be made of mild steel and keeps camming out whenever I put any pressure on it. The tangs burr way too easily in my opinion.

Is this normal? Are these tools meant to be made of a harder material?

the tool should not bur so easily but i believe your problem may be tight tangs in the oil seal holders. can you hammer the tool down into the bottom of the tanks for a tight fit?

I think my tool is made from mild steel - what buggers the tangs is when they jump out of the seal holder cut-outs because they themselves are worn or rounded off. Even with a new tool and perfect seal holders, it can take tremendous force to unscrew the holders sometimes requiring extensions to be added to the bars on the tool to increase the leverage. I've sometimes found it necessary to use the tool with the fork leg horizontal in a vice so that I can put my body weight behind the tool to stop it slipping out of the seal holder. Not the best design!

Thanks Spaceman

That's exactly what it was - the existing holder cut outs were knackered.

I filed an angle on the tangs, fitted the tool in place and gave it a tap downwards, then gave it a bit of wellie and managed to remove the holder.

Lol - clearly this seal had been leaking for a while as the PO had added loads of silicone all over the top of the bush in an effort to stop it.

Anyway, both A65 forks now have new seals.
