Title: Sooty plugs
Post by: royblackburn1@btinternet. on 31 Oct, 2022, 17:15
Hi,have noticed my plugs on my A65L are sooty on the edges and I'm thinking of putting the needle in my concentrics to the first position they are in the middle at the moment will this make the engine run lean and cause problems, thanks Roy

If it was my A65L, I think I would start by ruling out the idle mixture as the cause of the sooty plugs simply by taking the bike for a run out and then stopping the engine before it has a chance to idle. If still sooty then the idle mixture is probably not the cause.

Assuming the engine is in standard trim with the correct air filters then the main jet should be as standard as should the throttle valve cutaway.

Assuming the problem is not the idle mixture or the main jet or air filter then a rich mixture may be due to an incorrect float height or due to worn needles or needle jets. Simply changing the needle position is normally not a good idea as this will produce different effects at different throttle opens (1/4 to 3/4 throttle opening).

The float heights should be checked to make sure they are within tolerance. If ok then it may be a case of replacing the needle jets and the needles to be absolutely sure they are not the cause of the problem.
