Title: B40 head steady and tank mount.
Post by: Stubaker58 on 31 Oct, 2022, 16:07
Hello all,
I've finally made the jump to a four stroke BSA (from multiple Bantam ownership) and bought a B40 that "just needs finishing".
Suffice it to say that the previous owner/restorer was not so well acquainted with what went where. I've no doubt that over the coming months I'll need plenty of help.
The first thing is what should things look like under the tank. Could someone post a picture specifically of the head steady and of the bracket that supports the front of the tank.  I do have the parts book plus RR but it's not clear how things actually fit.
Thanks in advance.

The head steady arrangement is as per the drawing in the parts book. The two rocker box studs adjacent to the spark plug are fitted with washers and nuts to hold down the box - the triangular head steady bracket then fits over the exposed ends of these 2 x studs and is held down by a further pair of washers and nuts. The fittings for the decompressor cable are positioned on the RHS of the steady bracket. The steady stay is then bolted to the frame gusset and the top of the triangular steady bracket.

The tank bracket is suspended beneath the two small horizontal brackets either side of the front of the frame top tube. Two long bolts go through the frame brackets, through the two spacers into the tank bracket with the ends secured via washers and nuts. Two small mounting rubbers then fit into the outer holes in the tank bracket to support the weight of the tank.

Thanks Spaceman
The bike came with the wrong head steady (C15). The tank support cross piece is there but the tubes and bolts are homemade and I'm not convinced they're the correct length. Any dimensions?

Measuring the length of the spacer with the tank in place gives a length of about 2 1/8" on mine. With the tank sitting on the rubber pads, the rib along the bottom of the tank is more or less level with the bottom of the steering stop (block of metal) on the front of the down tube.

Don't know if this will help you. Haven't installed my B40 to the Bantam frame yet but hopefully in the next few weeks I'll be able to continue with the build.

Thanks both,
I'll get out and measure carefully tomorrow.
Are you really putting a B40 into a Bantam frame? That would be something!

The B40 was originally fitted with thin nuts (24-6040) and a washer underneath the steady bracket which are missing from the picture shown. I don't think they are absolutely necessary but they do raise the height of the bracket so that the decompressor cable attaches to the bracket at a similar height to the decompressor lever.
