any advice on how to remove large nut holding the gearbox sprocket, i have no gearchange yet and is in neutral so cant lock the nut, would it be a large box type spanner?, and what would be the torque setting if any, anti clockwise or clockwise to loosen it.
normal way to undo.
is it still in the bike? if so a piece of wood or 3/8" brass bar in the rear sprocket held in by the chain.
failing that, there are chain strap wrenches, a length of chain in a handle, some use for removing canister oil filters..
if tab washer clear and you have access to an impact gun, that might work but normally done up in excess of 55fl/lb
I've only ever removed a gearbox sprocket with the engine on the bench which enables you to use a large adjustable wrench to undo the nut. To do that I normally put a chain around the sprocket and lock its ends together in a vice.
If the engine is still in the bike, you can lock the sprocket by applying the rear brake or otherwise stopping the back wheel from turning. It would then be a case of trying to find a suitable deep socket or box spanner to fit.
ok thanks ile have to put the rear wheel and chain back on, i think ime trying to do to many things at once, in a rush to get back on the road.
Rather than put the rear wheel back on, it should be possible to jam the rear chain in position with a bit of ingenuity. For example, behind the swinging arm pivot. I suspect the main problem will be to find a suitable box spanner to undo the sprocket nut!
dont forget to flatten out the lock washer with a punch before attacking the nut
Surely, if the box is in neutral, jamming the chain wont help ???
You are not trying to undo a nut on the clutch shaft but the one holding the sprocket on. Locking the rear chain will stop it turning.
Durr. you're right.
