I picked up an almost complete A7/A10 plunger gearbox from a jumble a while ago and am trying to rebuild it. The shafts and gears all seem ok, the camplate is poor but usable and I have assembled everything successfully within the inner cover. However, I can't figure out how the kickstart quadrant and spring work and wonder if I have the correct types. The spring in the picture came with the box. The kickstart return was not working when I bought it. The spring appears to be broken or incomplete where it should connect to the quadrant and I can't see where it could be attached. The quadrant supplied has the indentation for the later springs which hook over the edge and I can't see how this spring could be attached. Have I got an early spring and a later quadrant?
There's not enough space in the outer cover for the later spring type and I tried adapting one by cutting off enough coils to fit in the box but it's never going to work.. so I am a bit stuck... all advice and ideas welcome...
Hi John,
The wrong spring has been put with the gearbox parts. Image of the parts from parts book.

Hi Dave, Thanks for your quick reply. I was resurrecting this problem as I'm still baffled after the help I got from a previous thread. I have a manual with a diagram that shows the box with this type of spring and the spring shown in the diagram you posted won't fit in the front cover. I'll see if I can pick up a front cover at the next jumble and see if it will fit with the usual spring. (The gear box on my A7 has exactly as described in your diagram)
Thanks again
John
Hi John,
The only thing I can think is that you have a pre unit C gear box outer cover which is probably quite different. It may be worth taking your spring and kickstart shaft with you to make sure it fits.
Dave.
