Title: A65 Star fork springs.....
Post by: 1660bob on 08 Oct, 2022, 16:13
Hi All, my 1962 Star was hitched to a sidecar in its previous life, and as far as I know, is fitted with the sidecar spec. springs in the forks.
Now that I have put it all together, that seems to be borne out as the forks are very hard indeed- Ive not ridden it yet but the forks are twice as stiff as my other bikes and it takes a real bounce on the bars to get them to compress even a bit.

I cannot find any replacement springs listed under the original solo spring part number ( 68-5040), so does anyone know which is the most appropriate replacement for solo work on an early (nacelle) A65?

As the early A65s forks are very similar to an A10, I would think that springs for an A10 would do.

I don't know if this helps, but when I took my 1970 forks apart, I found springs that were nothing like anything on Draganfly, either by length, number of coils or diameter. They are a larger diameter than any of those sold By Draganfly and do not fit into the fork spring support, which I have had to invert. I may be wrong, but I don't recall any major changes to the forks up to 1970, so you would probably be ok to fit the standard springs supplied by Draganfly, who seem to only show one type now, but used to have three different springs. I found these on fleabay that might be of use to you:

Not sure if they will be allowed here, but if the links have been removed, just google them and I'm sure you'll find something suitable. I probably wouldn't go for a cheap pair as they may not last long, but do buy a pair suitable to your weight - they come in different ratings. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies.

Yep,A10 ones seem to be the obvious choice.

I was thinking that the early A65 forks were different to the A10- but its only in the length of the stanchions, which were a bit shorter to acommodate the top yoke which IS different in that it steps down from centre to  stanchion sockets. None of which affects the spring arrangement. The only other difference is the 18" front wheel on the Star but again, not likely to have any bearing on the springs....A10 springs  it is then!
