Hi does anyone know where to get a new or remanufactured gearbox spocket 16T, Draganfly do a 17T for a C10 that may work if a 16T cannot be found.
The kick start pinion is 20T and I have been looking for a replacement and not found anything to date, the current pinion is worn and locks the gearbox up sometimes when starting.
thanks
Simon
On my L32-3, I machined-off the old sprocket teeth, bored out a sprocket obtained from a local bearing and transmission factor and welded it on.
The kickstart pinion is more tricky, it's a common problem. I think I'd just look for another gearbox and rob the bits. I have two gearboxes but I'm not in a position to part with one at the moment. There are three gearboxes on eBay at the moment, but they're silly money - there are thousands of these knocking around. This 'box is prone to breaking teeth on third(?) gear - 25 years ago I saw dozens of gearboxes at Newark, all with the same issue.
I too retoothed my own sprocket several years ago. I found the sprocket was hardened, making the job very time consuming. The sprocket warped during welding, and again during the hardening process. Some say the sprocket doesn't need hardening, so you'll have to choose.
I used to send mine to John Hemmings Engineering, but I haven't been able to contact them lately.
I have found that Simon Bateman at Nametab Engineering (01527 60395) can retooth them, but they are very busy, and it will take several months.
I believe you need 27-4112 Kickstart Ratchet. These seem to be available from Draganfly at a cost of £10.01 excluding Value Added.
I would try Cornucopia for the Pinion 27-4107, but it might work with just a new Ratchet.
Good to see someone else also has a 1933 B2. Unfortunately they are a bit different to all the other years, having no cush drive and a Maglita driven by a thin bicycle chain at engine speed from the crankshaft. I found the chain broke regularly until I fitted a beefier wider chain.
Sorry, the Pinion is 27-4106, not 4107.
Steve, David, thanks for the info, Cornucopia are no longer stocking for pre-war bikes.
The 27-4112 ratchet looks to be 18T, but they have no pinion to go with it, otherwise I might try it.
I was thinking that the sprocket was going to be a local remake, thanks for the confirmation.
I am waiting for a known good gearbox to be found, might not be pre-war but if it works it is going in or I will have the parts from it.
Many thanks and regards
Simon
Solved both problems.
Draganfly are putting a new 17T sprocket on my original part and Transpower Drives (Apple Rochester) Wellingborough are making a new 20T kickstart pinion, not cheap (£430 Inc VAT) but I will get the correct part
Final update.
Dragonfly failed to weld the new sprocket onto the original boss. Back to Transpower for a new sprocket, not cheap but machined from solid.
Finally got everything together and out on the road to its first show. Nine miles and all is ok with the gearbox.
This has now revealed other items of attention to sort out. Would not have got it if I was looking for an easy ride.
