Title: sump studs?
Post by: C15Geezer on 25 Sep, 2022, 01:11
I'm working on a 1969 Thunderbolt and have a problem with one of the sump cover studs being stipped out. A previous owner had apparently used JBweld to hold the stud in place. >:( I'm looking at possibly using E-Z Lock thread inserts. My question is are these through holes or blind holes, and how deep can I go??

I would have thought it was just a question of measuring the depth of one of the threaded holes, taking out one of the good studs if there are doubts about the hole for the stripped stud. They will be blind holes and you need to be very careful you don't convert the damaged one to a through hole!

I tend to use Helicoils as you don't need to drill out so much metal but E-Z Lok inserts work just as well, I believe.

 :) :) :)

I have an A65 motor on the bench and have checked. They are blind holes/.

Thank you both for your answers. Will have to take a depth measurement and see what we can come up with.
