Title: 1954 BSA B31 5 Gear oil change and kickstart Bush.
Post by: briancairns on 14 Sep, 2022, 15:46
Hi,

As you can guess by my question, I am very new to BSA and indeed, to any mechanics.
I need to drain the gear box to take cover off to try to change Kickstart bush (as there is a leak from kickstart)
Silly question 1: How to I take bush off?
Silly question2: where to re-fill gear box with oil? through large round inspection cover or at the gear box level bolt?

Thanks in advance

Brian

Not having ever changed a bush, I would say heat the outer case before tapping bush out. You fill the gearbox through the adjusting plate hole with the level screw out, when oil runs out jobs done. If you can lean the bike away from you when you take the cover off you will lose very little oil.

Thanks once again Idie.

:) ::), Please excuse my ignorance, where is the adjusting plate hole??

Cheers and apologies for all the silly questions.

Kickstart bush... Will probably need pressing out/in, my casing was actually worn oval and bush loose so I had to make an 'oversize' bush and drill out the casing.
I did drain the oil as I also removed the gearbox to renew the main shaft oil seal at the same time, refill oil through clutch adjustment (oval) cover.

Ok thanks so much.
Thinking I may have get an over size bush, lot of play and think the same thing has happened.
