Title: D1 suspension
Post by: Barnsey on 04 Sep, 2022, 11:21
Dear All,

I am considering buying a D1 Bantam to go alongside my C15.  Could anyone please tell me the relative merits of a hard tail versus a plunger frame?  Is the Plunger worth holding out for when there seem to be a number of hard tails around?

   Regards,

       Ian

The plunger D1 frame is obviously better than the original rigid frame since it provided a small amount of rear suspension cushioning. That said, since both used sprung seats, I doubt if you would notice too much difference on modern roads.

Hi,
It's worth knowing that some rigid frames are in fact plungers that have been altered. The rigid ones seem to command a premium. The simplicity of a rigid set-up appeals to some and avoids the potential sloppiness of worn plungers. The situation as regards originality can be checked against the frame number as the dispatch records will say rigid or spring frame.
Regards

I personally like the look of the rigid D1 compared with the plunger D1 and it would not surprise me if the former was more sought after. It would certainly be the version I would go for!

Having owned both rigid and plunger I would say plunger is definitely more comfortable (bouncy and hilarious to ride) although cornering is a bit more vague! but rigids do look great...
Whatever you decide I don't think you can beat a D1 for value smiles per mile. 8)
